Join us for our next Book Club class as we dive into the warm waters off the coast of Florida, USA with award winning shark scientist and environmental educator Jasmin Graham. Jasmin’s uplifting and deeply personal book Sharks Don’t Sink draws parallels between prejudices aimed at sharks and people of colour. The book maps her journey as she follows her love of the ocean to become an award winning young biologist, through rejecting academia and out to other side to becoming a 'rogue' scientist, a WWF Conservation Leader, serving on the Board of Directors for the American Elasmobranch Society, and her own TV show on PBS. And if that wasn't already enough, Jasmin is the co-founder of MISS (Minorities in Shark Sciences), an organisation that provides inclusive support for young marine biologists and campaigns for greater diversity in marine science.
Inspired by Jasmin’s knowledge and enthusiasm, we’ll be drawing two lesser documented shark species that are close to her heart – Bonnethead Sharks (the smallest of the Hammerheads) and Sawfish (the ray with the impressive rostrum!)
Artist and nature lover Jennie Webber will host the session and will guide you through the process of observational drawing. She will provide plenty of tips and tricks that she’s learned during her 10 years teaching people how to draw animals. We will work from some high-quality reference images and videos, and study the evolutionary traits that make these sharks so unique.
The class is open to all abilities, and there’s no pressure to work in a particular style. The basic materials you need to take part are some paper, a pencil, a sharpener and a rubber- but please feel free to work in whichever materials you enjoy using. We will send you an email before the session, which will contain a Zoom link and all the information you need. After the class, we will send all ticket holders a recording so you can catch up/ rewatch as many times as you like.
This class is the second in our new 'Book Club' series. You don’t need to have read Sharks Don't Sink to join the session, but we’re sure that by the end you’ll be heading to your nearest bookshop to pick up your copy.
50% of profits will be donated to MISS.
