This May, join us to learn about the crow’s cool cousin, the raven. These imposing birds are the largest members of the corvid family, with wingspans reaching as much as a metre wide. Just like all corvids, they’re seriously clever- studies have suggested that ravens have a level of intelligence equivalent to a five-year-old human! They’ve been shown to possess incredible problem-solving abilities and are adept at tool-making. Many people who have worked closely with them are also convinced that they display a keen sense of humour, particularly loving a good prank!
We will be live streaming to our friends over at Gauntlet Birds Of Prey, to meet ravishing ravens Scooby and Leonard. The pair will be given some snacks and puzzles to keep them entertained while we sketch them so we will be able to see those high IQ’s in action.
As a special treat for all you unusual bird lovers, we will also meet three species of caracara- a crested, a yellow-headed and a striated. These striking strutters are unique because, unlike most raptors, they spend more time walking than flying. They are opportunistic scavengers and, just like the ravens, are known for their curiosity and intelligence.
Artist and illustrator Jennie Webber will lead the session, beginning with her top tips on how to draw moving animals. She will provide plenty of creative guidance throughout and will be all ears for any creative queries that you have. Likewise, the Gauntlet team will be happy to answer any questions that you have about the birds. The class is open to all abilities, and there’s no pressure to work in a particular style or medium.
We will send you an email before the session which will contain a Zoom link all the information you need. After the class we will send out a recording of the session to all ticket holders, so you can rewatch as many times as you like.
50% of profits will be donated to Gauntlet Conservation Trust.
