Join us for a virtual trip to the Icelandic island of Vestmannaeyjar, which is home to one of the world’s largest Puffin populations. These brightly beaked birds live in underground burrows along the coast of the island, where they form monogamous breeding pairs and mate for life, with Puff Daddies sticking around to help raise the adorable pufflings!
We will be live streaming with the Sea Life Trust’s Puffin Rescue Centre. The majority of birds brought to the centre go on to be released back to the wild, but the birds we will be drawing are all unable to be released for various reasons. From Odin who has a missing eye, to Tier who is just too much of a people person, these birds would just not have a good survival rate in the wild. Luckily for them they have a forever home at the sanctuary, where the expert team ensure that their lives are filled with fun, fish and friendship.
The class will be hosted by nature artist Laura Cuppage, who will begin with a puffin drawing demonstration and some top tips on sketching moving models. The team at the sanctuary will then introduce our puffy-pals, and will teach us lots of interesting facts about the species and the issues facing them in the wild, as well as some of the delightful Icelandic traditions surrounding puffin welfare. The class is open to people of all artistic abilities- whether you’re a dab hand or an absolute beginner, with a bit of creative guidance we will have you sketching away in no time! The basic materials you need to take part are paper, a pencil, eraser and sharpener, but of course you are more than welcome to work in whatever materials you enjoy or have to hand. And just so you know, we will send out a recording of the session to all ticket holders after it takes place, so you can rewatch as many times as you like!
50% of profits will be donated directly to the Puffin Rescue Centre, part of the Beluga Whale Sanctuary.
