For our next live online class, I am OVERJOYED to be collaborating with Jenny & Jimmy Desmond and their pioneering sanctuary for rescued Baby Chimps in Liberia. We will meet Jenny, dedicated surrogate chimp mama, who will introduce us to three month old Mary Beauty, an orphan baby chimp rescued at only one week old after her mother was shot for bushmeat in the wild. As we sketch little Mary, and observe her snoozing and exploring with the help of surrogate mum Jenny, we will hear how the chimp rescue centre began and the harsh realities that face wild chimps in Liberia. Just before the end of the class, we'll connect to Jimmy who will introduce us to some of the slightly bigger (but still baby) chimps, and you'll get to witness the cute chaos that ensues!
Jenny and Jimmy Desmond have created a sanctuary for chimps that have been taken from the wild and sold into the illegal pet trade, and are raising money to continue building their new centre – including a vet centre, a forest corridor and a wetlands habitat – in the chimps natural habitat, the forest. And if you've not already watched the three-part Baby Chimp Rescue series on BBC iPlayer that follows the Desmond's story and their efforts to teach the baby chimps their life skills needed in the forest, you truly must. Immediately, if not sooner!
The class will begin with an introduction from WLD founder and artist Jennie Webber, who will take you through the basics of drawing animals life, focussing on their muscle structure and shapes. There will be a in-depth drawing demonstration of the angles, proportions and anatomical features of chimpanzees to identify – and Jennie will be on hand to demo, feedback or dish out creative advice throughout the whole session.
The basic materials you need to take part are paper, a pencil, eraser and sharpener, but of course you are more than welcome to work in whatever materials you enjoy or have to hand. Please get in touch if you need advice on materials, we're happy to help! You will be emailed instructions and the Zoom link to join 48 hours before the event is due to start. If you have not received your email 24 hours before the class please check your junk mail or get in touch with Jennie on info@wildlifedrawing.co.uk
50% of each ticket sold will be donated to Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue.
