Event Details

Our next class with Draw Brighton is a real treat, and will focus on rare birds. We will be meeting a female Hooded Vulture named Mauve, a magificent Bald Eagle named Xavier and (if she can fit in the van) a lovely Great Grey Owl too. Vultures are scavengers by nature and very recognisable with their curved beaks, dipped heads and their bald scalps – evolved to keep them clean whilst they pick the meat scraps out of the carcass. Bald Eagles are not bald in fact, they have a head of white feathers upon reaching adulthood and they are the bird synonymous with the United States of America. Xavier is 4 years old with almost white head plumage and a six foot wingspan!

We will be introduced to these fine feathers with a detailed talk from our experienced and dedicated falconer and learn about their anatomy, unique characteristics and how they’ve evolved different hunting methods. There will be plenty of facts to learn about where to see these birds in the wild and the conservation issues affecting these species – vultures in particular.

The drawing class is open to all, from beginners to advanced. All drawing materials are supplied, including paper and drawing boards, but please feel free to bring colours or any other specific media you might like to use. Drawing tips and guidance will be provided throughout the session. The aim of these drawing classes is to inspire a sense of appreciation and understanding for the animals and their conservation in the wider world.

Wild Life Drawing is working with the finest animal handlers, sanctuaries and organisations to put on these events. All the animals that attend the sessions are well used to humans and different environments and are always accompanied by experienced handlers, their welfare is our highest priority. The falconer that keeps these birds is a trusted and experienced animal handler that works with the RSPCA to rescue, rehabilitate and re-release wild birds of prey around the South of England.
