Wild Life Drawing: Coral Reefs

This year the London Aquarium unveiled their incredible new Coral Kingdom, housing the largest living coral reef in the UK. We'll be celebrating with another after hours class focussing on the important issue of coral conservation, as many reefs around the world are suffering dramatic destruction due to climate change, ocean acidification and overfishing. We will be drawing and exploring carefully nurtured living corals and the ecosystems they support in the 40ft tank; with fish including regal tangs, clownfish and cardinal fish and animals such as cleaner shrimp, starfish, hermit crabs and amazing anemones. As the night progresses we will see the coral start to glow bright neons with their bioluminescence. The aquarium is a leader in coral breeding and research programs, which are essential if we're to conserve what remaining reefs we have. 50% of each ticket sold will be donated to the Sea Life Trust, making a whopping total donation of £350 that will go towards protecting and increasing marine reserves, combatting overfishing and plastic pollution and opening new sanctuaries for marine life around the world.

The class will commence with a short talk introducing our group to coral reefs; how they form, the complex ecosystems they support and what we can do to help conserve the reefs. Although we will be concentrating on reef animals, attendees will have free rein of the aquarium and will be able to sketch the sharks, the sea turtles and the rays at their leisure. Aquarium experts will be ‘floating’ around ready to answer all your underwater questions and workshop leader Jennie Webber will be on hand for drawing tips and guidance. All materials provided, and all ages and abilities welcome!

The SEA LIFE London Aquarium in Westminster is home to thousands of species of aquatic animals – including penguins, octopus, turtles, stingrays and octopus – and is involved in several breeding programs including native rays and seahorses. The aquarium works closely with it's partner charity, the SEA LIFE Trust, to protect marine wildlife and habitats across the world, to protect endangered marine animals and to communicate key conservation messages to it's visitors. 

The drawing class is open to all, from beginners to advanced. All drawing materials are supplied, including paper, but please feel free to bring colours or any other specific media you might like to use. Drawing tips and guidance will be provided throughout the session. The aim of these drawing classes is to inspire a sense of appreciation and understanding for the animals and their conservation in the wider world.
