Animals have developed incredible methods of protecting themselves from predators, but none more so that the species that grow their armour as part of their bodies. In this special after hours drawing class at the London Aquarium, we will focus on Armoured Animals and learn how stay safe both in and out of water. In particular we'll draw the Sea Turtles, Snapping Turtles and Terrapins, whose hard shells are fused to their spine and ribcages. We'll be sketching the Sharks – whose skin is made up of hard tooth-like structures called dermal denticles – and the Dwarf African Crocodiles, protected by their hard bony scales. And from big to small; we'll learn about how Lobsters shed and grow new shells, how Hermit Crabs switch homes and how assassin bugs and hissing cockroaches protect themselves.

After a guided tour and introduction to some of the species, attendees will have free rein and can head off to explore the aquarium with their drawing boards, and helpful hints and creative guidance will be on hand from workshop leader, illustrator Jennie Webber.

The aquarium works closely with it's partner charity, the SEA LIFE Trust, to protect marine wildlife and habitats across the world and to communicate key conservation message to it's visitors. It is also involved in several breeding programs including the Cuban crocodile, seahorses, butterfly goodeids, and jellyfish, and works with many conservation organisations including Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, Save Our Seas, and The Shark Trust. 50% of each ticket sold will be donated to the SEA LIFE Trust, making a whopping total donation of £400!

The drawing class is open to all, from beginners to advanced. All drawing materials are supplied, including paper, but please feel free to bring colours or any other specific media you might like to use. Drawing tips and guidance will be provided throughout the session. The aim of these drawing classes is to inspire a sense of appreciation and understanding for the animals and their conservation in the wider world.
